He lasted longer than many thought he would. So I guess his treatments in Cuba did some good.

He was a thorn in the sides of two US presidents, not just one. His style was multifaceted; to the people of Venezuela he was a hero and/or a scourge; to left leaning foreign leaders he was an icon (to Cuba he was a lifeline); to the West he was an instigator.

When Franklin Roosevelt died most Americans mourned. Americans were surprised by the widespread grief that followed death of Joseph Stalin in Russia, but it seemed to be genuine. It will be interesting to see how the people of Venezuela respond to the death of their leader.

I predict obvious displays of widespread grief, not only in Venezuela, but elsewhere in Latin America.

Americans on the right assume too readily that the world shares their reactionary sentiments. They imagine that the Canadians are dissatisfied with their single payer health plan. They had difficulty understanding why so many South Vietnamese supported the Communists.

Of course they will mourn him in Venezuela and in some Latin American countries, he did a lot for the impoverished in his country and the area. What most folks (I suspect you included) don't see is what the true cost of his benevolence was, they lost whatever freedoms that they had.

This is a common failing of many socialistic governments.
